Ever Thought About What It Would Be Like To Live Backward?

Enjoy this Interview of Angelique Cooper McGlotten as she shares with us her new book Living Backward: The Gift Of Hindsight In Building A Truly Significant Life

Imagine looking back on the sum total of your earthly years . . . and realizing that your reasons to rejoice are far greater than your regrets. Living Backward is your invitation to discover the powerful gift of future-oriented hindsight and reap the incredible rewards it offers. As we grapple with today’s fleeting problem or tomorrow’s important choice, the ability to “live backward” provides us with not only a new perspective on our lives but also a powerful tool for creating true joy by fulfilling God’s plan for us. We desire to matter, and God knocks on our hearts, beckoning us to open the door to a life of eternal significance.

By way of word pictures, analogies, and personal anecdotes, Living Backward facilitates a head-to-heart understanding, helping us internalize key biblical principles so we can truly experience their life-changing power. Only then can we achieve genuine success, weave enduring significance into our lives, and make the most of the precious time we’ve been allotted.

LORILYN:  What inspired you to write Living Backward?

ANGELIQUE:  Remember what it was like many years ago to read book after book—some biblically sound and some not so much—in my earnest attempt to live a life pleasing to God. I could never seem to figure out how all the advice and directives in the books fit together.

After reading hundreds of books on all aspects of the Christian life, I was finally able to gain a solid biblical understanding of God’s eternal purpose for me and how to live what I learned. Many years later, I discovered that many sincere followers of Christ have the same struggle I once had. Namely, how do I practically walk out God’s plan for my life? What does a Christ-exalting life look like? How do I grow from who I am into the person God created me to be?

My heart also ached that so many of God’s people don’t really know Him, nor have they truly tasted and seen that He is good (see Psalm 34:8) and infinitely worthy of our lives bringing Him honor and glory. That’s when God birthed the desire to write this book: a discipleship tool that condenses into one volume those major topics and key principles a person needs to know and understand in order to fulfill God’s purpose for creating us. In short, a book that contains the essentials that I desperately needed to know those many years ago when I was searching.

Drawing on God’s Word, my spiritual journey and experience, as well as the wisdom and knowledge gleaned from my extensive reading, I wanted to help others connect the dots in their own lives without having to pore through so many books.

LORILYN:  Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

ANGELIQUE:  Like anything else, we get better with practice. So write and rewrite, then write some more. Put time and effort into honing your craft if it’s truly important to you. Consider joining a writer’s group where your writing can be objectively and constructively critiqued. If you intend to publish your work, do your best to understand the ever-changing publishing landscape and to fully understand the advantages and disadvantages associated with traditional versus independent publishing. Lastly, join the John 316 Author Network! J You can’t possibly know everything, so it’s great connecting with other authors/writers to share, learn, and grow together. I personally have gleaned much from the wealth of information that is shared amongst this wonderful group of people.

LORILYN:  What is your favorite time of day to write?

ANGELQUE:  Late at night—for some reason I think most clearly in the wee hours of the morning when the house is totally quiet.

LORILYN:  What is something most people don’t know about you?

ANGELIQUE:  I love to play the drums. Many are surprised when they discover I play in the worship band when we gather on Sunday mornings.

LORILYN:  What are your favourite types of movies?

ANGELIQUE:  I really enjoy movies that are inspirational, paint an engaging redemptive story, or highlight the triumph of the human spirit.

LORILYN:  Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?

ANGELIQUE:  We all know that a GPS works based on a reverse principle—starting at the intended destination, it works backward to our current location. In a similar way, Living Backward challenges us to chart the course of our existence from the end of our lives. Then working backward, we engage life through the lens of time elapsing, not accruing, as we typically do. This mindset enables us to grasp that with each passing year we haven’t just gained more time to live—we’ve also lost some of the precious, irretrievable time we’ve been allotted to create significance in our life. So if we truly want our lives to count, we must wisely redeem the time as we pursue our God-given purpose.

LORILYN:  What is your favourite Scripture verse and why?

ANGELIQUE: Isaiah 26:8-9 because for me it encapsulates the longing and passion that God desires us to have both for Him and the advancement of His glory.

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying:
“Whom shall I send,
And who will go for Us?”
Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
And He said, “Go, and tell this people:
‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand;
Keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’

LORILYN: What authors have inspired your own writing?

ANGELIQUE: John Piper, Elisabeth Elliott, Randy Alcorn, Jerry Bridges

Wakulla Book Review: "The Frenchman" by Sandra Julian Barker

“We have a very interesting and wonderful book written about a time of history that I have given very little thought about.

This is an amazing tale written in the time of great suffering and human tragedy coming upon each family born in life.  In those years of unharmony, people just got along the best that they could with other families that lived around them.  America was not thought of much as a good place to go to settle.  America was just a place to get away from your neighbors in the old country, and come to a place where you might find a future for your loved ones to live free.

This book tells about the early heartbreaks of the people that immigrated to this country before we became a country.

A great, great book written for people like me to read about our ancestors.  My own ancestors immigrated in to Canada and settled in what became Watertown, N.Y. from France.  So this story was more beholding to me than most people.  Excellent book!”

Wakulla Book Review: Time and Again, by Deborah Heal

A most profound and most gratifying book for me to have the pleasure of reading. I am looking forward to getting the next one in line.

This work took me completely by surprise numbers of times throughout the book. It was a most refreshing book to just sit back and read without interruptions. Awk! Go away people. I’m reading here!

The next one won’t surprise me as much, so I’ll be more ready. This one the author did an exceptional job on, and I will remember her name.

I guess that listening to the younger people around you can really pay off, if you listen to the computer’s way of doing business. Aren’t business machines just wonderful pieces of equipment?

Thank you for this book.

Wakulla Book Review: The Frenchman by Sandra Julian Barker

“The Frenchman”:  “Sandra Barker weaves an incredible tale in this historical fiction novel based on Rene de St. Julien, her grandfather seven generations back.

Intertwining fact with fiction, we travel with Rene as he leaves the only home he has ever known and his little sister Bernadette following the death of his father.

Ending up in Paris in the home of his mother’s brother who is Catholic and hates Rene and his Huguenot (Protestant) beliefs, for two years, Rene becomes little more than a slave to his uncle.

This novel shows the resiliency of the human spirit as we watch Rene grow from a boy to a man.  We experience the wonders, friendships, loves, heartbreaks, lies, deceits, and religious persecutions a this young man struggles to hold onto his faith in a time where it is becoming extremely dangerous to be a Huguenot.

We glimpse some of the politics of the late 1600s and early 1700s as Rene enters the military under King Louis XIV of France, flees for his life after the religious freedom act is revoked, enters the Dutch military under the Protestant king William the Orange and follows him to England where he is crowned William III in place of the Catholic king, King James.

Finally, we travel with Rene to America after he struggles with the decision to leave the military and Europe, knowing he’d never see his sister Bernadette again.

Again his faith is tested through a series of events that leaves him shipwrecked in Bermuda; where he trusts love again.

With a new wife, he lands in South Carolina.  In a vast new world, Rene and his wife Margaret fight through hardships and lose to forge a legacy that is still being experienced today.  This is an excellent read.”

Wakulla Book Review: Ivory & Ice by Sandra Julian Barker

“What a wonderful story.  It seems I finished as soon as I started.

I love the way Ms. Barker not only showed the similarities between now and past civilizations, but a clear contrast between Beth and Jaen.  Beth feared love and commitment and Jaen embraced it in a journey to her mate that ultimately cost her life.

Jaen loved her family and mourned leaving, even though the call of love pulled her to Baarak in a distant culture.  Beth on the other hand needed relief from her family of dysfunction and hostility.

The character development was superior and the idea of two complete stories in one, captivating.

Bravo!  I eagerly await another installment; maybe another anthropology adventure with Beth.  Does Steve turn away in uncertainty because of her previous rejection?  Had she waited too long and someone else claimed Kevin?

And what about the waiting Baarak?  Did he get covered and captured by the glacier as Jaen?  Maybe we’ll never know.”

Wakulla Book Review: The Last Detail, by Lisa Lickel

A missionary from the Mideastern Nehrangesi people, Merit Campbell, is seriously injured in a skirmish and sent home to Illinois to heal. But does he really serve so far away from home for other reasons? After the death of his mother, father, and oldest brother, Merit has developed a fear of abandonment that keeps him from really being close to anyone.

Then there’s Amalia Kennedy, Superwoman to all in need. She owns a shop called The Last Detail. She handles, plans, and arranges end of life essentials, handles the other tedious things of life that causes others much stress and heartache, and she’s really good at it. But underneath it all, Amalia is suffering from loneliness and fear of commitment.

In this book the two fall in love and struggle to overcome their deep life controlling issues while learning to depend on each other. Also to communicate and share their lives with each other.

Love has to be two people committed to sharing everything, even past hurts, present fears, and future anxieties. Communication and full disclosure of oneself is what will build a binding relationship.

Theme: The struggle two Christians needlessly endure when they don’t confess all to each other. How people hide behind God and allow life controlling issues to destroy their love and their life.

I loved the struggle with Hudson over whether one had to go overseas to support foreigners when there is need in our country, our own city.

I also love the way the author got into the character’s feelings about the issue. I think Mrs. Lickel stands firm in God sends His people to where he needs and wants them, whether it’s overseas or out the front door.

Merit had to learn to do God’s work wherever God placed him.

This book is a really great read, the story comes alive as one sees their own struggle in the plot. Too many people refuse to communicate what’s really going on in their lives, allowing fears, anxieties and misunderstandings to ruin their relationships.

But just as Mrs. Lickel’s characters overcame through love, Christ, family and friends, so can we all. This book is awesome!
