Wakulla Book Review: The Map Quilt by Lisa J. Lickel

The Map Quilt is an attention grabber. From the first page until the last I was thoroughly entertained and mesmerized. This is a book laced with history, politics, mystery, love, hope, and faith. By the end of the book I felt like I was a part of the character’s lives.

From the atrocities of slavery and the perils of escape through the underground railroad to modern corporate espionage, there is never a dull moment. The plot twists and turns at just the right moments to keep the reader guessing until the end.

Bringing up real issues from the past, and tying them together with today’s controversies about “green” energy, the tale is quite realistic. The best part of the story for me is the thread of faith that ties it all together.

I would give this book 4 ½ stars out of 5 – I may have given it a 5 had I read the first book in the series.

Well done!

Wakulla Book Review: Meander Scar by Lisa J. Lickel

Summary of Book:

Ann Ballard’s husband Gene Ballard has been missing for seven and a half years. She’s raised her only son Ritchie “who seems to hate his mother while adoring his missing father” alone.
Mark Roth is a young man who lived next door until his younger brother Trey died in an auto accident which also involved Ritchie who lived through it. He is eleven years younger than Ann but is fully in love with Ann.

Mark returns to town and helps Ann to learn to live and love again. Also to deal with finding her lost husband and the betrayal of her mother-in-law. Mark stands by Ann until all the pieces fall into place and they can face the world as a younger man and older wife. But then Ann has a stroke and Mark’s faith is tested to the max.

Author’s purpose: The author assumes the position that true love conquers all. If it’s mean to be, it will be.

Themes:  Donna’s Treachery/Ann’s Headaches and fears/The stroke Ann had/Love can conquer all

Controversial issues:

1.              Younger man/Older woman: The author stands on love being more important than age.
2.              Sex before marriage: The author believes it’s a gift worth waiting for.
3.              Whether to press charges on Donna for fraud: Circumstances and motives should be weighed and considered.

Thesis:  True love can stand, overcome, and conquer over every obstacle when God is its foundation.

I really loved this love story and was blown away by Mark’s faith and resolve to stand firm and love Ann unconditionally. When he told her he loved her enough to go away if that was what she wanted, I was floored.

The deception of the mother-in-law, Donna, the rebellion and confusion of the niece, Maeve, the anger and rebellion of the son, Ritchie, even the bitter and loving relations between Ann and her sister Rachel.

This love story – mystery is really good. I’d give it five stars on a five star scale.

Wakulla Book Review: Straight Pipes, by Barbara Ann Derksen

Whether you’re just an affiliated club member, patch wearer, or you just ride for fun, you’ll soon be blowing your pipes for Jesus. This devotion takes the hard learned principles of the Holy Bible and not only makes them practical but applicable as well. The vernacular of a little known society is used fluidly and in a way that is easily related to by the biker.

The book teaches evangelism techniques to a people who are seldonly understood and are more or less tolerated, as well as gives perfect examples of how to follow through.

I loved it. I was reminded of the society I was once associated with and the feel of this devotional can easily give you a picture of Jesus on a motorcycle headed across the country spreading His Good News. –  Jaxon, inmate, Wakulla Correctional Institution, FLA
