Book Review by Award-Winning Author Lorilyn Roberts of Lisa J. Lickel's New Medical/Romance Thriller "UnderCut"

UnderCut by Lisa J. Lickel may be her best novel yet. The story begins with a couple who are engaged amid a backdrop of family dysfunction, emotional entanglements, medical intrigue, and dark forces out for revenge. The narrative builds into an engrossing plotline that is driven forward with authentic, engaging characters caught in the crossfire of evil.

The medical thriller never lags, and many themes dealing with complex and relevant issues concerning racial relations, adoption, and family dynamics take center stage.

More subtle topics like the intersection of faith in the midst of suffering add depth and authenticity to the characters.

I also learned more than I knew before about the world of kidney transplants and the need for more volunteers to sign up on the national register.

While the story has a good solid ending, the author left an opening for a sequel, so I look forward to reading the next book in the series if one should follow.

About the Book

At the tender age of thirteen, orphaned Jenny Low decides to take matters in her own hands and runs away from her captive life in a Ute tribe. Rescued from near death by a kindly teamster, Samuel Baunof, Jenny is sent to live with a family in Glenwood Springs, Colorado in 1886. She learns the truth of wickedness and runs again straight into true evil.

Meanwhile, Samuel holds his head up while facing life's cruelty head on. A few years later, he crosses paths with the orphaned girl he once rescued. Now a beautiful young woman, Jenny is a God-send in his time of need. Their trials aren’t over and Samuel finds himself tracking her through the wilderness where, unbeknownst to him, someone else is after her too. Will he get to her in time?

Can these two people with completely different backgrounds and beliefs help each other and those around them? Is Samuel able to rescue Jenny from the horror her life has been drawn into? Is his faith strong enough to help her understand that God loves her and didn’t abandon her? Jenny is challenged to accept love and forgiveness even when she feels the world closing in.

Lisa's review

Heart-achy love story between a young girl, brutally abused on the old west of Colorado, and a widower searching for someone to care for his young children.

It’s a familiar trope well-retold by a master storyteller. Fuson’s tales are always dramatic and life-changing no matter where or when they’re set.

Jenny has an almost True Grit aspect to her life, though she needs to kindness of others to help her escape the desperate circumstances she is in. After escaping from one horror and jumping into the next, this girl just can’t get a break until her life circles around to meet with the rescuer who thought he’d done a good deed.

Samuel has a good position as a teamster in Colorado; it’s just that he’s on the road for days at a time and when his wife passes away, he has three young tots to care for. Life is funny when it leads him back to the young girl he rescued from the desert. Horrified to learn the couple who took her in failed her dreadfully, and the next troubling circumstance she entered was even worse, Samuel was more than determined to see her safe.

Nicely told from both sides of gritty realism, romance readers will enjoy Fuson’s latest story.

Crazy Creek, Wyoming saves Leah Hanes's life. Running on fumes and bald tires, she thanks heaven for Cookie and Jeanette Wimmer who send her to the Rocking J Ranch as a winter cook. Leah arrives to discover the ranch and the people need more than a cook.

Noel Johansen, heir of the Rocking J, happily left for the big city years ago. When he loses his family in a terrible accident, the best thing for everyone is to sell the place, ditch the memories, and move on. But his brother-in-law has other plans, and the beautiful new cook they've hired for the season threatens Noel's desire to remain detached.

The ranch represents Noel's future and selling it becomes more important than ever when one more tragedy leaves him with nothing. But memories can't be bought and sold, nor can a broken conscience heal itself. Home, heart, and future are irrevocably tied in Crazy Creek.

Wakulla Book Review: A Summer in Oakville by Lisa Lickel and Shellie Neumeier, Review by Booker T.

Four of the Hasmer family are about to learn about love, forgiveness, and God. Contessa, known as Tessa, is seeking to divorce her husband Phil who has moved away to a big city and a job promotion—or so it seems. An old boyfriend is back in town, whom she’s attracted to.

Lindsey is a college graduate who can’t find a job so she moves in to her grandparents’ home and takes up the fight to save their farm.

Andy is an out of control teenager who’s lost his mom in a helicopter crash and is unable to connect with his father.

Arthur, or Art, is Andy’s father and is suffering from his wife’s death, his son’s out of control behavior, and his own demons concerning his brother Otto’s death years ago

Back on the farm in the summer, they find Oakville, Wisconsin to bring therapy, love, and a relationship with Christ into all four lives.

Purpose: One story has many different sides. The authors show how it differs from person to person.

Themes: Broken marriages and renewals. Letting loose and taking a chance on love. Forgiving yourself and others. Connecting and communicating to stop the pain.

This is a really good book. I enjoyed having the story from each of the four main characters. It really put a different spin on the whole story each time and left me sorting through my mind to connect the facts, feelings, and realities in the end. Good job, ladies.

Wakulla Book Review: The Map Quilt by Lisa J. Lickel

The Map Quilt is an attention grabber. From the first page until the last I was thoroughly entertained and mesmerized. This is a book laced with history, politics, mystery, love, hope, and faith. By the end of the book I felt like I was a part of the character’s lives.

From the atrocities of slavery and the perils of escape through the underground railroad to modern corporate espionage, there is never a dull moment. The plot twists and turns at just the right moments to keep the reader guessing until the end.

Bringing up real issues from the past, and tying them together with today’s controversies about “green” energy, the tale is quite realistic. The best part of the story for me is the thread of faith that ties it all together.

I would give this book 4 ½ stars out of 5 – I may have given it a 5 had I read the first book in the series.

Well done!
