Fit for Prayer (40 pages)

Learn how to fit prayer and physical activity into your daily routine. The book unites physical health and spiritual health to help you lose weight and develop a deeper relationship with God.

The author shares about what cardiovascular exercise and strength training do for building a strong body, and links it to prayer life building spiritual strength. The author encourages readers to develop a discipline of strength and cardiovascular training in the same way as training our prayer life to build a good quality of health and mood that is pleasing to the Lord.

Taking Scripture from I Corinthians 3:16, the author reminds us that our bodies are the Lord’s temple in which His Spirit dwells. As with her books in the Fit for Faith series, we are shown what both exercise and prayer are and what they are not, as well as the benefits of both.

Exercise is not difficult, painful, or something that must involve going to a gym. Benefits include maintaining a healthy weight and uplifted mood. A series of strategies such as take time in small chunks, have fun, track your progress, and team up with friends or family may breathe new life into your routine. The books in this Fit for Faith series are also workbooks and have space for goal-setting and managing accomplishments. A list of many different types of exercises is included along with ideas for being specific about your goals.

Building your prayer life is like strength-training for your spirit.
From Philippians 4:6 we are reminded that setting our prayers before God results in a transcending peace. Prayer is not a one-time emergency call-out or something for spiritually mature folks who only talk to God in church. The author tells us that prayer is spending time both talking and listening to God, and a time of physical and emotional rest.

I have followed several types of acronyms for prayer, but the author introduces a new one to me: PATH – praise, admit, thank, help – to remind readers to be balanced in our time with God.

As with all the books in this series, there is a worksheet for reflection and personal goal-setting, lots of encouragement, and some great ideas for an action plan that works for each reader.


Food for Thought (30 pages)

Find out how to nourish your body and spirit through healthy eating and Bible study. Just as eating healthy foods nourishes your body, Bible study nourishes your spirit. You will learn practical suggestions and scriptural guidance to achieve your goals.

The author shares the similarities between feeding your body and soul with the ultimate goal of honoring and pleasing God.

Using Scripture from Genesis 1:29, the author shows the reader that God ordained eating. Eating does not have to be an elaborate and time-consuming complicated ritual. Chapter two contains fourteen easy strategies to help vary and teach your mind and body about ways to eat healthy; ideas such as not eating the same food within four days and giving your brain twenty minutes to catch up with your full stomach, drinking plenty of water and keeping a food diary.

This book in the author’s Fit for Faith series on being fit and healthy also includes gentle information in a non-threatening or overwhelming manner and space to personalize your goals. As with her other books, two, this Canadian author combines body and spirit; in this case, Bible reading. We are reminded that the Bible is not one big clunky boring book, and as with eating, moderation and consistency are good keys. Chapters five and six are strategies and personalized goal planning for incorporating spiritual nourishment into our day.

A quiz, action plan, and page of encouragement are included. As the author says, “Don’t just endure life, enjoy it!”


Flex your Spirit (28 pages)

Discover a new way to express yourself with God through journal writing and stretching. Learn how to recharge your physical and emotional health through stretching activities for your body and spirit. 
Lisa's review: Part of the Fit for Faith series, this small book is for physical and spiritual health to help develop a deeper relationship with God, lose weight and develop healthier eating habits through stretching exercises and journaling.

Using scripture from I Timothy 4:8, the author lays out the guiding principle behind staying healthy for added energy and for honoring God.

The author lets us know that stretching exercise is not the same as warming up before a series of strenuous exercises, that it’s a good regimen to keep our muscles in shape, especially if we have sedentary work or lifestyles. The benefits of these exercises are numerous and reduce stress and risk of injury.

The book includes reminders to make sure you’re cleared by your doctor to do a physical routine, as well as space to write down personal goals. While the authors offers advice about flexing your muscles, there is no specific exercises to practice. This is a guide for encouragement, not a “how to” book.

The author combines flexing your physical body with your spiritual self. Keeping a journal helps keep us on task by being honest and real, and is a good outlet for our feelings, goals and prayers. There are also write-in spaces for journal-writing goals.

The author offers a daily Scripture to meditate on, advice for a healthy eating habit, a specific exercise with a how-to, and a fill-in-the-blank PATH prayer model (praise, admit, thank, help).

In encouraging readers to continue the routine and support each other, the author offers a Facebook group, Pinterest page, an online registered challenge (free of charge).


Recommended for those who need a kick and a plan of attack to get into a routine of beneficial spiritual and physical daily exercise that fits your personal lifestyle.

Wakulla Book Review: " First and Goal" by Jake Byrne with H. Michael

"First and Goal" by Jake Byrne with H. Michael


The author describes his life experiences while using Scripture as a “building block” for getting him through the rough times.

He shows that anything is possible when you have faith in God. Nothing is impossible.

God will always be with you throughout all phases and situations in your life. It is better to put your trust in Him than in anyone else.


God had a plan for the author before he was born; God has a plan for all of us.

Carol, tell us about your new book. 

Sassy Pants Learns About Strange Creatures finds her worrying about reactions as she tries to make amends and encounters critters that are different from herself or any other resident of Farmer White’s farm. She is not sure how to react! She seeks the advice of someone older and wiser. She learns there is a “strange” that is just different from me – these are friends you have not yet met. And then there is “strange” that is dangerous and that requires a very different reaction! She discovers an entirely different picture of her father.

What message do you want readers to grasp? 

Fear and worry exaggerate our problems. The good news is that we can overcome fear and worry.  And secondly, if we can not be offended by differences (like looks or smell) we may find a good friend. On the other hand, some strangers are truly dangerous. We need to learn the difference and know who to call for help.

What inspired this book?  My husband urged me to write a sequel to the first book in the Sassy Pants series. He argued that she was so naughty in the first book that I should give her the opportunity to redeem herself. But I didn’t have another story in me. I even asked God’s help in convincing him there were no more stories, and that was when God downloaded the rest of the series. So...here we are!

SASSY PANTS LEARNS About Strange Creatures
The strange creature stared at her a few moments, then made a smart sharp turn, and continued on, like he was measuring off the boundaries of the whole farm. He wheezed and grunted as he walked, and every few steps he accompanied himself with an awful smelling toot. Sassy Pants blinked two times, just in case she needed to wake herself up.
        But the strange creature was still moving along the fence. For a few moments she just stood there. Was that thing the dangerous kind of strange, or just a different kind? How could she tell?
        He had a nose that looked all pushed in, and long flappy lips that hung down on both sides of his mouth. His face was all wrinkly, and his lower jaw stuck out. But the strangest thing of all was he only had three and a half legs! The last half was wooden! Sassy Pants had never seen anything like it.
        Oh, dear! That was too much in one day for one little pig. So, as soon as the strange creature was far enough ahead not to care what was behind, Sassy Pants slipped back into her pigpen, squished herself into her comfy spot near the water hole, and closed her eyes.
In fact, she spent the rest of the day in the pigpen. Just sleeping, and doing pig things. Her pigpen didn't feel like such a bad place to be, anymore. Not really. Especially if you were a pig. Tomorrow would be soon enough to think about strange creatures... apologizing to the big Boss Hog... and the coming of the Great Separation.
She didn't give those things another thought. At least, not until after breakfast the next day. All the way up until the time she saw Old Clyde moving slowly along the other side of the fence, trimming some of he long sweet grass around a post where the pigpen and the pasture joined together. He had known about the critter-spitter, so, maybe he would know about the creature with a wooden leg, too.
"Old Clyde!” She called out to him before she even got close enough to say hello. “You will never guess—there's another strange creature on this farm!”
        The barnyard counselor looked through the fence at her. “Did it have three and a half legs, and a scrunched up nose? And did it grunt when it walked, and toot every other step?”
“How’d you know?”

“I have eyes and ears, Sassy Pants.”
“Oh, yeah. And a nose, too. Peee-oooo!”
“Now, why would you care what he smells like? You being a pig.”
“I know I smell like a pig, Old Clyde, but this is different. Pigs don't smell that bad!”

“Don't they?”

“Pig smell is part of our barnyard. Look how many of us there are. I'm glad there's only one of THAT strange creature. He's so ugly, he's scary! Could be he eats little pigs for supper.”
“Sassy Pants, where are your manners?”

“I dropped them somewhere, I guess.”

“Remember how I told you some animals that come to Farmer White's barnyard need a second chance at something? Now, wasn't that good news to you when you needed a second chance?”
Sassy Pants did remember what good news that was. Especially on the day she had “learned the hard way” and thought she broke every friendship she would ever have. If she hadn't had a second chance she might have been lonely for the rest of her life! Oh, yes. That's when she learned about fixing friendships, and how to make amends.
She was quiet for a while, just remembering all that, when she suddenly got a brilliant idea! “Old Clyde?”
The horse stopped trimming the grass and looked through the fence, again.
“Maybe that strange creature broke some of his friendships, too.”

“Maybe. He is all by himself. He walks the whole fence line of the barnyard, every day at the same time, and he's always alone. So, even if he has friends somewhere else, he doesn't seem to have any here.”

“Old Clyde, you think telling someone how to fix their friendships would be a valuable thing to do?”

“Only if they cared about fixing them. Nobody really likes to be told what to do.”

“I have to find something valuable to do! It might help me stay here in the barnyard instead of going on the Great Separation, whenever that happens.”
“Then maybe it would be a good idea to talk to that strange creature. Maybe you'll learn something. Like when you talked to the llama, yesterday. This one might turn out not be such a strange creature, either. Just someone else who needs a second chance.” The horse went back to trimming the sweet grass around the fence posts.
“You mean actually talk to that... that stinky-poo? I’m not sure I want to talk to somebody who smells like that.”
“Just make sure the wind is blowing the other direction.” Then Old Clyde laughed. “That's what I do whenever I want to eat this nice sweet grass that grows so close to the pigpen.”
That's how Sassy Pants made up her mind to give it a try. But it seemed the stinky creature had disappeared. Then, just before naptime, when she was headed over to her comfortable muddy place near the water hole, again, she heard the strange creature's wheezy grunting and tooting. He was coming!

Wakulla Book Review: “Burning at the Boss” by Martin Roth


A murder has taken place and it’s personal for Johnny Ravine. He is dating the preacher’s daughter and it’s her father who has been murdered. Helping him along the way, of course, are his friends Pastor Ron and Rohan. The past comes to the present, in more ways than one.

I think the author is trying to say that no matter what you have done in your past, it will always be a part of you – good or bad.

I enjoyed reading the book and have recommended it to others. I am a little saddened that this is the last of the series and Johnny Ravine, but I look forward to reading more books from Martin Roth.
