A Taste of Friday First Chapters with Kimberley Payne and Women of Strength

Introduction
I created this devotional book out of a desire to become more physically healthy. As a former personal trainer, I knew all about exercise and nutrition, however, I still missed something. Or should I say, Someone.
In the past, I’d never included God in my health and fitness plan. I thought it wasn't something worthy of His attention. However, God checked my spirit and told me that He wants to be part of everything in my life; even something as small as losing a few pounds.
How can you become a woman of strength today?
You can honour your body by taking care of it – both physically and spiritually. Women of Strength is the perfect companion for your health program. There are four divisions to follow the seasons – winter, spring, summer, autumn. Each season is further divided into 6 sections that include an inspirational devotional, a fact on common health and fitness questions, a reflection, a prayer, a Bible verse, and an energizing exercise.
My prayer is for you to improve your spiritual and physical health through the seasons!

I gained a pound in the last week. It really is remarkable how a small number on the scale can have such great significance. Last week, I didn’t gorge and eat with gluttonous hunger. I didn’t sit down to seven-course meals and midnight snacks. No, the error I made wasn’t in the big sense but rather in the small. I neglected to mind what I ate. That is, I didn’t pay attention. I ignored my body signals of hunger and fullness. I ate food while tending to other matters – as if eating were second to other activities. I ate food for the mere taste of it and, more often than not, I ate without fully knowing I was eating.
When I am mindful of what I eat I truly enjoy it. I look to it as a source of pleasure and nourishment. When I treat food with respect I treat my body with respect. It is the same with my Christian behaviour. Some days, I tend to get lazy with my worship of God and just go through the motions. I may go to church but my mind is tending to other matters. When I’m not mindful of my prayers and pay lip service to them, they come only from my mind but not my heart. It’s not enough to practice spiritual rituals. I must worship God with my heart as well as my mouth.
My intentions may be good but if I don’t pay enough attention to the Word, I realize that I haven’t lived up to my true call as a Christian. Although I didn’t commit a horrendous sin, my behaviour isn’t reflected in the large events. Instead, it’s the small details. Was I patient and slow to anger? Did I respect the clerk behind the counter, obviously overwhelmed by the volume of customers? Was I kind and gentle with my children? I realize that my misbehaviour hurts God more than anyone else.
I pray that I won’t be like those spoken of in Isaiah 29:13, “The Lord says: These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men.”
I don’t want to go through the motions, but rather, I want to pay attention to the details of my heart. God is in the little things. He is in the every day. If I look to Him in my everyday life, I’ll grow spiritually strong. I want to be healthy in body, mind and spirit.

Exercise Your Funny Bone
The Best Vitamin for a Christian: B1

You Asked
Q: Do I need to spend hours in the gym to see results from an exercise program?
A: Even if you don’t have time for a formal workout during your day, any exercise is better than none. Try to take three 10-minute walks. For strength training, three 20-minute sessions a week will do the job.
Faith Lift
Dear Father – I pray that You will provide me with the courage to accept Your power and make the changes You ask of me. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
Reflection
Yesterday, I spent the majority of my time outdoors playing in the snow. I got some good cardio activity from clearing the front walkway and back deck. Then I built a snow fort to play war with my son and his best friend. And, if I may say so myself, the fort looked fantastic!
What are you doing to enjoy the season your in now?

Top Tip
Check with your doctor – You should get medical clearance from your physician before making any significant changes in your physical activity level.

Bible Truth
“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you” (1 Corinthians 3:16 NIV)?

Challenge
Drink one less caffeine beverage every day.

Praise Move: Legs - Lunge
Stand holding a dumbbell in each hand, your hands next to your thighs and palms facing your body.
Keep your feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, abdominals contracted.
Take a long stride forward so that your knee is directly over your heel and your thigh is almost parallel to the floor.
Your rear leg should be relaxed and bent so that the knee almost touches the floor.
Hold this position for a moment, and then push back to the starting position. Repeat 10 times.
Repeat for other leg.
Tips
1. The forward flexed knee should not extend past the forward foot.
2. Keep your upper body in line with your hips.

3. Learn proper technique before adding weight.

A Taste of Friday, with Kimberley Payne: Fit For Faith

Welcome Kimberley Payne!

Fit for Faith is a unique workbook program. In addition to learning about the three components of fitness – cardiovascular exercise, strength training and stretching – your relationship with God will be strengthened through daily prayer, Scripture reading and daily journal writing.
God created you as a whole person, therefore take care of your whole self, not just the individual parts. A direct relationship exists between physical, emotional and spiritual health. A healthy body gives you the energy and enthusiasm to carry out the purposes that God has for your life. Practicing healthy living glorifies God.
This workbook is an invitation for you to discover for yourself the joys of treating your body with respect, learning to love yourself and connecting with God on a deeper level. You are invited to take a fresh physical and spiritual attitude on a daily basis.
You will learn that God truly cares. He is personal and He is intimate. God does listen to your prayers and is there for you. When you rely on God totally, for everything – including such things as losing a few pounds – He will bless you. God loves you and He wants you to love yourself. He did not create you to look at your body in disgust, but rather God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. (Genesis 1:31)
Each day, follow the outline provided and start with a simple prayer. Read the question in the reflection section and write your own response. At the end of the day, answer the three questions about your activity and healthy eating habits. Test your knowledge with the myth. Finally, close each day by meditating on the scripture verse.
The Fit for Faith Review is a personal record of your week. It is a self-evaluation tool that reflects your strengths and defines areas that need improvement.
You need to be faithful about doing something each day in order to realize the full potential of God’s plan for you. You are invited to develop physical well-being and grow spiritually to deepen your relationship with God. Prayer, Bible study and journal writing are to your spirit what exercise, healthy eating and stretching are to your body.

Blessings on your journey to health!

Part I: Exercise your body + Exercise your spirit

Cardiovascular exercise & Strength training + Prayer

Think of exercise as either cardiovascular activity or strength training. Cardiovascular activity helps you to increase energy and keep moving. It is good for your heart, lungs and circulatory system. Strength training (also known as weightlifting) helps you keep your bones and muscles strong, reduces bone loss and improves balance and posture.
Prayer helps you to enter into a spiritual communion with God.
What cardiovascular exercise and strength training do for building a strong body, prayer does to build spiritual strength. Your body requires exercise and food, and it needs these things regularly. You cannot just take care of it at the beginning of the week and forget about it. Your spiritual life is similar to your physical body in that way. You cannot pray just once and have a healthy, growing spiritual life.
In strength training, you start by lifting small weights, and as you grow stronger, you can lift heavier weights. It is the same with prayer. You start by praying a short amount of time, and then as your desire grows you can spend time in prayer every day.
Just as exercise strengthens your body, prayer strengthens your spirit. Similarities between exercise and prayer include:

To be physically and spiritually healthy requires discipline. You need to practice both daily and use this strength or you will lose it.
The effects can be both immediate and/or long term. You may see the results right away or the effects can be cumulative.
Both exercise and prayer improve balance in your life, improve your quality of life and boost your mood.
With a pure motive, both delight God.

Exercise your body

What it is

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16)
Exercise rejuvenates your body. Cardiovascular exercise equips you to sustain an activity for a long period of time. It causes you to breathe more deeply and work your heart harder. When you are strength training you use resistance to strengthen your muscles.

What it’s not

Cardiovascular exercise is not only going to the gym and participating in an aerobics class. It does not make any difference whether you go to a gym or what equipment you use. Try to figure out where activity fits into your life. Any physical activity is better than no exercise. You need to do only about 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily and that half-hour can accumulate in shorter pieces.
Strength training is not only for men or for younger people. Women of any age can also benefit, particularly those most likely to suffer from osteoporosis.

Benefits of exercise

  • Elevates mood
  • Improves balance and mobility
  • Maintains a healthy weight
  • Increases energy level
  • Builds strength and tones muscles
  • A pure motive delights God

Discover the many benefits to exercise, including feelings of accomplishment and well-being, increased energy, reduced stress and improved sleep patterns.
Research indicates that activity reduces the risk of heart disease, falls and injuries, obesity, high blood pressure, adult onset diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke, depression, colon cancer and premature death. The U.S. Surgeon General has determined that lack of physical activity is as detrimental to your health as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.
Regular cardiovascular exercise (aerobic exercise) helps you burn calories faster, even when you are sitting still. It does this by raising your metabolism (the rate you burn calories) up to 15 hours after exercising.
Strength training (weight lifting) helps you to better deal with everyday tasks, improves posture, increases firmness of muscles, and helps prevent osteoporosis. It also helps you build muscle so that even if you do not lose pounds, you may lose inches.
You need to include both cardiovascular exercise as well as strength training into your exercise program.

Your unique talent:

I’m really good at spotting loose change on the ground.

Share something not many people know about you:

I still have baby teeth with no permanent teeth coming behind them. I’m just a kid at heart!

Are you a “pet person” or prefer no pets?

I love all animals! Actually, my next children’s book will be about animals from the Bible.

Would you rather travel or stay at home?

I like to stay at home, although if it’s a vacation to a sunny all-inclusive spot, I won’t say no.

Do you read more or write more?

I love to read. I’ve been alternating between reading on my e-reader and reading “real” books.

Prefer cake or pie?

If I have to pick, I’ll choose cake over pie. But I won’t turn down either.

Would, or do, ride a motorcycle or prefer to ride/drive a car?

I’d love to learn to drive a three-wheeler motorbike and ride across Canada with my hubby.

Bus or taxi or walk?

If it’s not too far, I prefer to walk. I enjoyed living in a small town where I could walk to all the stores downtown.

Are you part of a big church congregation or a small church?

I live in a small village and attend a small church with only about 150 members. It’s nice to know everyone’s name.

Do you like to telephone people or prefer to use e-mail?

I like Skype to talk to relatives who live in Holland, and texting to keep in touch with friends and family. I’m not big on the phone.

Are you happy or joyful?

I’d say that I have my happy moments but I have joy deep down all the time.

Do you eat at home or eat out?

I try to eat at home, although I’ve found that hubby and I have been going out to eat much more lately.

Listen to music or prefer quiet?

Love to listen to music when I’m at my computer and at work. Otherwise, I prefer the quiet.

Prefer sunrises or sunsets?

Both, but find it hard to be up early enough to watch the sunrise.

Fearless Friday: Meet Kimberley Payne!

Meet and Greet Kimberley Payne

I am an over-40, peri-menopausal mother of two teenagers. I am happily married to a man I believe was a direct answer to a desperate prayer. I am a half-cup-full optimist who’s been blessed with a short memory.

Years ago, I began a spiritual and physical health partnership with God. I created a workbook, Fit for Faith – 7 weeks to improved spiritual and physical health.

Although I write in the health and fitness arena, I don't consider myself an athlete. As a matter of fact, I once thought of myself as more on an anti-athlete. However, I've since come around and have settled on recreational athlete. You can read about my journey in the anthology A Second Cup of Hot Apple Cider - Words to Stimulate the Mind and Delight the Spirit. My piece is called, A Personal Makeover - Inside and Out.

My most recent book is Women of Strength – A devotional to improve spiritual & physical health

I’m a dreamer. Every night, I have at least one dream. Over the years, I have read dream interpretation books and dream dictionaries. However, none captured the true essence of my nightlife until I started to read the Bible and pray daily. Now many of my dreams come with an interpretation already in my heart upon waking in the morning. Night Stories is a collection of eight dreams that I have had and what I felt the Lord told me through them. God is the only One who reveals mysteries and interprets dreams.

Your unique talent (can be serious or humorous)

I collect pet fur – not because I like it but rather to try to keep my house somewhat clean—with two cats, two rats, and an aging German Shepherd.

Share something not many people know about you:

Although not naturally blond, nor do I have blue eyes, Dutch blood runs through my veins. I love croquettes, double zout drops and Suske & Wiske. I have fond childhood memories of a close family, with three older brothers who went swimming at the YMCA on Friday nights, played card games like “Pit” and went camping every summer.

Which best describes your personality:

Are you a “pet person” or prefer no pets? Very much a pet person – we’ve had a hedge hog, hamsters, lots of fish, rats, cats, dogs, and a little salamander.

Would you rather travel or stay at home? I’m a homebody who loves the quiet of my sunroom. However, I like to travel when all the arrangements are made and I just need to pack a bag.

Do you read more or write more? I’m a reader. I like to alternate fiction with non-fiction.

Prefer cake or pie? Both! I have a real sweet tooth and won’t turn down any pastry.

Would, or do, ride a motorcycle or prefer to ride/drive a car? On my bucket-list is the desire to drive a motorcycle. Since they recently came out with the Spyder – a three-wheeled motorbike, I see that wish becoming a reality sooner rather than later.

How about taking the bus or walking? Absolutely walking. I love to walk, and hike. Evening walks are bliss.

Are you part of a big church congregation or a small church? On a good Sunday in the summer, we may have 30 people in the pews. I’d say that’s probably a small church.

Would you describe yourself as happy or joyful? Joyful. But I do have happy days!

Do you like to telephone people or prefer to use e-mail? My job requires me to be on the phone all day, so I won’t even answer the phone at home. Email is so much faster and easier.

Do you eat at home or eat out? We eat take-out at home :)

Listen to music or prefer quiet? When outdoors, I prefer the sounds of nature. When doing housework, I love to have the music cranked.

Prefer sunrises or sunsets? Definitely sunsets as I’m seldom up early enough to enjoy the sunrise.
